color testing

Hi, I've looked at the UC Davis website and see that for color genetics they need approximately 20 hairs with root tip. I hate sounding dumb but what and where is the best place on the pony to get hairs with root tips? I'm assuming they don't mean mane or tail hair, that'd be too easy. So getting body hair with root tip, any tips? Thank you.

Usually its just tail hairs, but I could be mistaken :-)

My pony is black to me, a definite black year round and has one very small white star on forehead. I want to know what else may be there as I'm considering having her bred this Spring or next year to a gorgeous Welsh Sport Pony Stallion who is a silver dappled buckskin with chocolate points.

Mane or tail hair is fine- I just used a pulling comb at the base of my horse's mane near his withers when I got him color tested. 20 hairs isn't a whole lot either- you won't notice any hairs missing unless you pull A LOT of them (way more than 20)

I recommend doing it pretty quickly though because they get pretty annoyed with you pulling hairs by the root out repeatedly.

A pair of needle nose pliers work well, so does a curry comb to pull the hair by the roots from the mane or tail.

I usually go from the base of the neck. Wrap them around my pinkie and give a quick tug.
