TB that bucks after jump
I've XP'd in Eventing (since we do combined training) and Training forums, but thought I'd post here for good measure. Any input is good input IMO :)
I'll make it short and sweet. I have an OTTB that I've had for 9 years. When he knocks a rail, he gets PISSED and bucks. He's a pro bucker. Usually I can stay in the saddle (more out of self preservation than skill...) but today he got me in the dirt. He only does this at home, not st shows or schooling elsewhere. But since we school 95% at home, it's a problem.
I feel like I should add that his bucks are intense-near 90 degree angle bucks. Today, my trainer told me nobody could have ridden through it. A few years ago (the only other time he's gotten me off), a 2 time Olympian was shocked when I got back in the saddle after he bucked so hard I came off.
So how do you deal with a horse with anger management issues?
I'm going to guess pain issues or extra sensitivity issues, not anger.
Have you had him looked at by a vet?
Does he buck ONLY when he hits a rail?
Does he buck EVERY time he hits a rail?
Does it matter how he hits the rail? (front or back leg, hoof, cannon, etc)
Do you use any type of protective boot on him?
Does it matter how the distance was to the fence?
Not for that specific problem. I'll have him looked at next time she is out.
He will occasionally crow hop after a jump, but it's more out of excitedness. He does the same thing (throw his head around and sort of do a leap) when we do our gallops, too.
Yes, every time he hits a rail at home he bucks (or kicks) to some degree. He doesn't buck when we are schooling elsewhere or showing.
Nope, doesn't matter at all.
He wears these boots on the front.

This last time, he was rushing the fence and wanted to take off long but I pushed him to the correct spot. Since his approach was ugly the jump was ugly and that's what caused him to pull the rail.
