The patience pole
Apollo got to spend a good amount of time tied to the "patience pole" today. He decided to be an antsy brat and wanted to wiggle around in the cross ties and pretend he has no manners. He had to spend a half an hour tied to the pole where he could see the herd having a fun time playing (which I thought would be a challenge for him since he's showing signs of becoming herd bound, but he did great) and with me standing around the corner keeping an eye on him. He was a little wiggly at first but after a minute or two he stopped wiggling and had turned around so he was watching the barn door waiting for me to step around the corner...and when he would see me peek around he would nicker at me lol. He eventually relaxed and dropped his head, licked his lips and relaxed his back leg and then got to go back with the herd a couple minutes later.
He looks like a little boy who got in trouble...he was not amused haha
Ha! I have a "naughty tree" at my house. My gelding was tied to it for a couple hours while he dried off from a bath-- AFTER he rolled once while tied to the fence.
Good to let them stew in their own juices once in awhile. Like a time out. Did he promise to be a good boy and never do it again?
Lol we also have a patience pole. They are great aren't they?
He was being very good today! No wiggling at all and was very calm compared to yesterday...maybe because all of the horses were in today due to the crappy cold/muddy/rainy/snowy weather so he wasn't being antsy to get back outside. Either way I was happy he wasn't being a brat today. I'm sure he will spend quite a bit more time on the patience pole in the future...it'll be good for him :)
He's always better behaved when he has been in his stall all day...I'd think he'd be a nut job from not getting to play outside and burn off some energy, but he's the opposite.
I love my big sturdy post. Best patience teacher ever.
