small sores on horses face, wont heal

my gelding has had a small sore on his face for about the last year and a half. its about the size of a finger nail. it always looks like it heals over, but the crusties just slough off and its still there. it does bleed either. i went out today and realized he had a couple of them now on his face all about the same size, kind of greyish in color. they dont bother him even when i pick at them. at first when there was just one i thought maybe he was just rubbing there all the time and not allowing it to heal, but now there are 4 in different area on his face. im not sure how long the new ones have been there since he gets such a thick winter coat. has anyone else come across these or know what they are.

Do you have pictures?

Pictures would be helpful. First thing that comes to mind is ringworm, although it could be a number of other things, and without pictures, it's impossible to say.

I don't think ringworm would stay for a year and a half and only stay on the face.

Get your vet to do a culture on it and see if its a fungus of some sort, then you'll know for sure. Pics would help on here too.

Have you used any creams on it? Is it itchy? Is there a bump with the sores?

Looks like a fungus, but could also be dermatitis that can be caused by tack. Try putting an anti fungal cream like Tinactin (you can get it at any pharmacy) daily for a week or so and see if there is any change.
