How long did your horses grow for?
My mare is supposed to be turning 7 end of June.
My question is how long do your draft crosses usually grow to?
I am asking because I just got her in fall and she has gain 1 or 2 bridle holes and 4 breast plate holes and one inch in height . . .apart from gaining weight her shoulder blades are wider.
My vet and farrier tell me her teeth look like a four year olds. . . .but I am still in contact with her breeder, and since she raised her I think she would know her age, she was their only '06 baby, I can post pictures of her teeth later. . .
Does this seem normal?
I am hoping to get her jumping/cross country this summer but is 7 going to be too young for a draft cross?
She is 50/50 Shire dam, Arabian sire.
I don't have her dams papers with me right now for her reg. but her dad is MCA Magic Mca Magic Arabian
I found his stud page and it says he is 15.2 hh, Dahlia is just a smidgen over that.
My neighbor who has a rescue barn said that in her experience arabians have always matured slower like draft horses do, so maybe she got a double does of late blooming?
Just curious, she is 100% healthy. She isn't getting taller but I didn't expect her to grow out of her bridle at 6.
There is no one here to help me so these are the best I could get lol
My Aires (Percheron/paint cross) will be 4 in May and he's still growing. I expect him to continue to fill out over the next 2-3 years (but am hoping his head doesn't grow any more because we're already into draft-sized bridles and halters! ). Right now he's 16.1-16.2hh and a solid 1500lbs. His sire (APHA stallion) was 15.1hh and his dam (black Percheron mare) was 17.1hh.
There was a guy with a Belgian/QH cross at my old barn. Winston was nine when I met him and, according to his owner, didn't stop growing/filling out until he was about 7.

My horse isn't a draft cross, but she is an Arabian cross. At 4 years old, the vet said (2 different ones) she in all ways looked like she was 1 1/2 years old, no more than 2. She's almost 6 now, and in the last year has shot up nearly a full hand in height. I know her age, as I handled her when she was born.
I heard Arabians mature slower, but I thought this was rather ridiculous. Between 5 (when she was mature enough to work on regular riding, she was started at 4 and vets gave me a huge no no to hard work) and now, I've gone thru tons and tons of different tack for her because she is incredibly hard to fit and then changes shape constantly.
I'm hoping she is gonna settle out now, but a lot of people have said I can expect a good year or so before she really settles in. I'm already having a hard time getting on her (she's 15h now, but I'm only 5'2")
Thanks for the replies! I am hoping she doesn't get any taller, I don't think she will but she is definitely filling out more.
My full blood draft grew till around 6. He would be jacked up in the front end one week the next week he would be jacked up in the back end, and wasn't sure what to do with all his feet. Finally around 5-5 1/2 he stopped growing up but was still filling out.
Thats why its a good idea to wait till later to train a draft with weight.
My horse is a light draft (not a mix, just a breed variety in my country) and he's just gained his full height, but will do still a little bit more maturing at 7. I expect him to full in for one more year or so, until he's 8 - a normal thing for draft types.
