leasing my horse
I just leased my horse out to a woman and she lives about 2 hours away. She knows that I want to come see her stables etc. at some point. Should I go out ahead of time...before my horse goes there and check things out? or after he has been there for a short time and settled in? or would it be out of the question to go follow along when they transport him to their place?
The last option is the one I wanted to do...I feel sad about leasing my horse out, but I'm doing a free lease and the woman is a trainer and will be training him for free, and he does need more training. Im sure he's going to think he's been sold...=( and I feel bad about that too, I thought if I was there to settle him in and say goodbye he might feel reassured about things. He's going to miss our other horses. They are buddies.
Definitely go beforehand, unscheduled if you can. You want to be able to see how things are run when they're not expecting you, if things are clean, horses are in good condition, etc.
And not to sound harsh but your horse probably isn't going to care as long as he's well taken care of, fed and comfortable. Horses aren't sentimental like people are, you just need to make sure he has an adequate standard of care. Check in on him every so often, etc.
