I think my black lab has kennel cough, which is really odd because normally dogs get it due to cramped living conditions, or so I've read. We have a large fenced in back yard, a HUGE dog house, and both our outside dogs get plenty of outside (outside of the fence) activity.
I'm not sure, but I think it could be due to bortitella (sp) as well. Both my labs have had the bortitella vaccination, but Tilly has not (was going to get it next week). To complicate things further, I know Tilly has had direct contact with both my labs, and Kennel Cough is highly contagious.
So needless to say, a trip to the vet is in order.
Anyone else have any experience with Kennel Cough?
Yep sure do. My new boy has it right now, I took him to the
vet and they gave me two bottles of pills for his cough, I have
to give him 3 pills a a day and he HATES it!
Lets see the pills are called "Temaril P" and "Primor 120mg" that
he is currently taking.
Although there is a vaccine (Bordatella) for Kennel Cough, it is often not
effective in preventing infection. The most likely explanation for this is that
there are many strains and mutations of the virus out there. Therefore, it is
hit or miss whether the vaccine used on your dog will be the right one for
the strain with which your dog comes into contact. This is similar to the "flu
shot" for people; each year a vaccine is developed based on which strain(s)
are suspected to be most prevalent. Be aware that your dog can still catch
Kennel Cough even if s/he has had a shot to prevent it.
Yep, just got back from the vet... She has it, and is now taking meds for it. oye...
We have to keep Tilly away from the other dogs until she gets her shot next week, so we'll see how everything goes.
Oye is right! So sorry to hear she has it, I hope both of our
doggies will get over it soon. :(
