First dressage lesson!!
I had my first dressage lesson today! :happydance: and I LOVED it! I was a little nervous because this is my first lesson in several years, but it was entirely unwarranted. Anna, my trainer (found her through USEF) is quirky and absolutely communicates on my wavelength. It's my second or third week riding English since... well, about 8 years ago when I converted to Western, and she was so helpful in putting me into position. I will probably be sore tomorrow. Definitely had a mini-charlie horse in the middle of the lesson from all of that calf work. But we had such wonderful moments!
Trainer loved Jax and seems really positive about us working together. She was happily surprised by his movement after I told her that he was previously trained for western pleasure... I didn't say anything, but we've been working on that since I bought him in December! It was nice to have some validation on our work together, and on his general awesomeness to which I am extremely biased. He was really well-behaved today. I was a proud momma.
So, I think I'm going to continue with this trainer! :D We have another lesson next Friday and I am going to bust my butt (literally) to work on what we started today.
HOORAY! Can you tell I'm on cloud 9?!
that sounds great
what kind of stuff did she have you work on? and did your horse know any of this stuff before?
I got a quarterhorse draft cross last summer and I'd like to work on dressage with her and am curious about where to start her.
sounds like you had fun. =) post about your next lesson.
When I was preparing for the lesson over the past few days, we did lots of transitions, changes in speed, etc. I think the preparation made our lesson more productive.
And no, Jax has never done dressage before-- like I mentioned, he's only done western pleasure and a little bit of hunter pleasure and sidesaddle, so we've worked a lot on swinging forward movement. He does pretty well with leg yields, yielding the fore and yielding the hind, which I taught him partly for fun and partly to make life easier. ;-)
