Buttefly naffle bit for neck reining?
Hi. We just bought a new horse who is trained in both direct and neck reining...he has been using a "butterfly snaffle bit" for direct reining and I want to neck rein him...don't know what kind of bit to buy. He does follow leg pressures as well. Also, we are not in to showing or gaming, we trailride only. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Ah, the butterfly snaffle.....an interesting bit, not one I would suggest but whatever. anyway, are you planning on showing? If not, a simple o-ring snaffle would be fine. No reason why a snaffle wouldn't work. But if you want a curb bit I'd go with one that has a short shank and a low port. Look into the Myler bits. Those bits have independent movement on each side which is great. Also, with whatever you use, get a curb strap, not a chain, so that the bit doesn't slide through the horse's mouth.

I am not planning on showing...would a curb bit work better? I don't want anything too harsh on his mouth, still learning about bits...I have some info printed off on Myler bits, heard they are good. Thanks!

A horse that truly neck reins can use any bit since it is your aids and the outside rein against his neck that will turn him. The particular bit you posted is not a snaffle but rather a broken mouth shanked bit with a slight gag effect and should not be used for direct reining.
I would try a simple "D" ring snaffle which will work for direct or indirect reining. Myler makes good bits. I would try this one due to the type of mouth piece it has:

I agree. Look into the Myler snaffles. I have the Myler comfort snaffle (eggbutt) for my warmblood and he loves that thing. Of course I'm not neck reining on my warmblood, lol, but the type of bit for neck reining doesn't matter, unless you were showing, in which case you would need a curb I believe.
