holding head high
My new horse Phoraoh, if I grab his halter he throws his head up high and all around, but if I use the lead rope he is fine, how can I resolve this? He was a boarded horse,I dont know how much contact he had.If that helps. Thanks
I take it you don't much about his history. You maybe moving you hand too quickly and he thinks you going to hit him. Before you go for the halter put the back of your hand to his nose so he can sniff you and then slowly reach for the side of his halter, all the while talking softly to him. Hold the halter give him a few strokes of you hand than let the halter go. Repeat a few times a day, he'll figure it out you aren't going to hurt him.
Will he drop his head to be haltered or tacked up?
Good advise from Mom. Make sure you are saying hello as soon as you approach the horse (letting him smell the back of your hand) Move slowly Horses hate quick movers, so the slower the better till he figures you out.
I like to use the face itself rather than the halter if I need to move my horses head during grooming or tacking. Just use the bridge of the nose to gently move the head. Around a horses head, gentle and slow is always the key.
Yeh... im in agreeance with whats been said. I have the similar problem with Poppy.. Any tension with the halter that puts presure on the pole is chucks his head and runs backwards. We found out he was out in the pole.. So i would reckonmend you getting him checked out. It mighten be anything, but its better being safe then sound :-)
you can also do desensitizing exercises...with your hand, then a rope, then a whip, then a bag, etc. until he's sacked out and accepts it :)
thanks for all ya'll advice. I always talk to him and pet, he'll let you touch him anywhere, but when I grab his halter which I have no problem doing, he tosses his head everywhere. So I have been doing some ground work and despooking him, there are some things that he is afraid of.I think thats just cuz he is arabain.I guess I'll keep doing what I am doing and letting him settle in to his new home, too.hopefully within the next couple of weeks I'll be able to ride him.The vet coming out within a week to float his teeth so I'll mention it to him.
