I need tips for careing for full seat breeches

This year I have decided to just go for full seat breeches as I have discovered that it is so much easier to stay in my saddle with them. However, I am finding that many, especially the more expensive ones tend to get stiff in the seat, so to speak.

I generally wash my breeches in my side load washer, on cold with "Eucalan" (a Lanolin based, phosphate free "no rinse" wash designed for wool sweaters). Although it DOES get rinsed from my breeches, and I also put in a little apple cider vinegar for the rinse instead of fabric softeners as I'm worried about a traditional softener making them slide in my saddle, plus I am allergic to most soaps so I have to do the vinegar on all of my clothes with or without softener to prevent hives.

Anyway, my knee pad and full seat breeches that are a decent brand have been experiencing stiffness on the suede or suede like material. I am not sure how to fix this. My trainer says that she uses saddle oil on these areas, this sort of seems strange to me. Is this right?

Oh heck no! I hang them to dry, much to hubbies dismay.

If they are made with synthetic, they should not stiffen at all. I wash my Boinks in the laundry as if they were not even breeches. The leather ones, I wash as you described, nixing any vinegar, hang dry . Wash as little as possible.

what brand are these ?

When my daughter was into hunter jumper and showing I put her "dry clean only" fancy pairs in the dryer using Dryel (a "home" dry cleaning kit) between dryclean visits. It works pretty well for that purpose.

Actually I have found with full seat breeches that get stiff after air drying (and you do this with anything suede, even chaps), and are totally dry, put them in the dryer on air fluff setting, no heat. They come out soft and looking like new.

^^ I concur! Also, just hand rubbing the suede after they dry helps - it happens to all suede.

I have 1 pair irideon, 1 romfh, 2 pair Kerrits, a Tough Rider, some cheapie devon air (which I love and I do put in the dryer) and a pair of Annies which seem to be CRAPOLA as I have only worn them 2 times and the seat is fraying/pilling and when I washed them teeny pieces of the grey seat material came off and stuck to the rest of the breech so my black breeches now permanently look dirty. :(

It seems I have less issues with the cheaper brands, however they don't last more than a year for me (tears, rips, etc).

Hey! Here's some good news for you - I have all of those brands and I put them all in the dryer (of course I couldn't bring myself to do it the first year) but after that I got tired of the extra work. THey come out just fine. Not saying you should do it, but I've been drying mine for many years - those brands - I'd never do it to real hides like deerskin of course!

So if you get tired of the drying and rubbing like I did, know that all is not lost and they will all go thru the dryer just fine and still last longer than your favorite pair of jeans. :D:D

Oh there is one pair I don't put in the dryer - it is the kerrits brand full seat with the neoprene seat - don't know if you have this one, but I don't dry it just b/c I'm afraid it would melt! This is the pair I'm talking about: Kerrits Flex Tights - Full Seat Breeches from SmartPak Equine
