Very "twitchy" horse--any ideas
My 15 year old QH/Arab gelding is very twitchy. His skin twitches when you brush him, when you saddle him, when the reins hit the side of his neck, etc.
He does NOT like to be brushed.
He is great under saddle with no behavioral problems. The chiropractor was out Thursday and adjusted him but he is still twitchy.
I was wondering if magnesium might be helpful. I know that with people it helps but didn't know about horses.
Mg could help but what is the rest of his diet like... some horses have issues with corn, soybeans or alfalfa that will cause skin sensitivity
Do you know his pedigree? Does he have Impressive?
He *might* have hypp. http://www.bringinglighttohypp.org
Does it happen all the time or only on occasions?
Well, he gets 1/8th cup of Buckeye Grown N Win twice a day just to put with this supplements. He gets about 1/2 flake of alfalfa/grass hay once a day and then the rest is pasture and grass hay. No other grains or sweet feed, etc.
As to the HYPP, I don't know his breeding. Would he have any other symptoms/signs, etc. No one mentioned that to me before as a possiblity.
Now, he hates to be brushed in his stall but stands nicely for it at the trailer or tied outside (he came with some stall issues). Today I rode him 3 hours on the trails and didn't notice any twitching. He does though twitch with the flies. It seems more of a skin twitching than a muscle twitch (although I know it takes muscles in the skin to twitch).
oh ok. I just thought I'd mention it. If you go to that website i have in my other post, there's a section where you can see what other symptoms are.
Other than that, I'm out of ideas... sorry.
Is he a chestnut or sorrel? They tend to be more sensitive skinned and don't tolerate strong brushing.
He is a chestnut and doens't like any brushing. He tolerates it but doesn't like it.
He does seem to have sensitive skin and the flies drive him nuts in the summer.
Softer brushes and softer strokes. I often spray him with something like show sheen, it helps make the next grooming session easier.
I use to have a horse that twitched ALL the time!!! If you were riding her and put your hand on her withers she would shake.. we did it for fun alot. but im not sure why she did it.. she was a Bay, breeding stock paint. She did the same thing when you brushed her.I tried posting a picture.. not sure if it will work tho lol
