Holds bit wonky in her mouth??
Hey guys :)
Alli is going well in her schooling work but when we are just chilling out on hacks i have noticed she appears to hold her bit wonky in her mouth, as in the reins appear unequall lengths in my hands when i gather them up from the buckle, even though the reins them sleves are not stretched and its not me holding the reins odd lengths or twisting my body (99% sure bout this anyway hehe)
She has a 5 1/2"french links eggbut snaffel with rubber donuts. The bit isn't too wide for her mouth as 5" is too small, but the bit is quite curved. I think she holds the bit to one side in her mouth. She doesnt do this when working properly in the school though (or i at least havent noticed it even though i have been keeping an eye out for it).
Any suggestions on how i can straighten her wonky mouth, or any ideas as to why she does this? Thanks for any replies xx
(had her teeth checked in august 2012 last)
Could have broken something in mouth, bars, jaw, teeth.
Could have something in soft palate.
Could have nerve issues.
If you are seeing this, you need to call out equine dentist/vet I think.
Cheers Palomine :) My first though was that she might be in pain or have a tender spot, but she shows no resistance to me bitting her or taking up a contact from a loose rein. Plus she accepts the bit and softens into a working outline happily too.
She has never come to any harm which could have hurt her jaw and the dentist said she had never seen a horse with teeth as good a Alz dispite her never having seen a densitst in her whole 7 1/2 years of life! I doubt it is pain, although who knows what she's done to herself that i never become aware of!
But perhaps a vet call it is...
You say she's going well in her training which to me suggests she hasn't properly learned to hold a bit yet or has a preference on which side she bends or in other words, hasn't had the ah ha moment where she realizes i can properly hold myself both directions. Have you lunged her in side reins? Does she bend properly or does she have a side that she bends better in and when you switch it up on her does she seem stiff in the other?
What kind of a difference are we talking about, an inch or several?
She is stronger on her right hand side (difference is less noticable on lunge with/out side reins and in long lines but still there) but her training pretty much ground to a halt this winter which only elaborated her imbalance. It is only this last month that i actually noticed and thought 'hey shes wonky, but wait, my reins and me are even, hmm' and its about an inch if not less. I noticed but my friend doesnt seem to have. I know shes has been getting more and more uneven due to crappy weather and lack of time so perhaps its finally reached the point of noticability for me! Especially seen as i admitedly havent exactly been paying attention to her schooling recently...
Thinking this through, she is stronger to the right and the unevenness is with the right rein shorter even though her neck and back is straight ish- not in an outline of any kind, just relaxed strolling down the lane. Its like she is leaning on the left side of the bit for support maybe... I think you are right in her not quite reaching the 'ah ha' moment! With some evening out work, perhaps we'll solve this! I'll talk to my instructor when i next see her though and see what she thinks! Thanks Ash!
Are you sure the unevenness is coming from the bit, and not from crookedness through her neck or twist at the poll?

I would have the vet out and chiropractor out if it were me. I'd check all avenues cause it may affect more than how she holds the bit. Not to worry you, but I find it best to be thorough.
Best of luck reaching the problem.
I definitely second chiro! Sounds like she's out of joint somewhere, I'd rule that out before looking at her training.
