Eating after sedation
My friesian mare is very....lets say cautious. She is going to be shipped to America in a month or so. Because of this she needed her blood taken. A year or so ago she injured her rump severely. Required surgery and all, she was doing well when she rolled out in the pasture and tore her stitches. She fought like a mad horse against getting the sedation (kicking biting screaming the whole shibang). Anyways, I am wondering how long after the horse is sedated that they are able to eat. I know this depends on the horse and how much sedation, but if they are still acting sleepy is there the still still the possibility of them choking on their food/hay? Thankyou for listening to my ramble:-)

Yes there is a chance. I wouldn't offer food until the sediation wears off. How long will she be sediated for?

This actually already happened yesterday. I was just wondering because for about an hour and a half after she was sedated she was visibly sleepy but she was interested in eating but I did not allow her two for 2 hours. I was also told that sedation is harder on friesians because they have smaller hearts. When they are sleepy from the sedation, are their swallowing abilities lessened/at risk or do they just kind of fall asleep when they are chewing? thanks:-)

Horses are usually always interested in food so that isn't a good indicator that they are ok to eat. It would be the same as if you tried to eat after having sediation for something, your motor skills are effected and slowed. They might try to swallow before they have properly chewed, not being able to properly chew food, taking to big of mouthfulls, basically sleep eating. Not sure about the size of the heart thing though. You did the right thing by not letting her eat until it had worn off.

My vet always told me at least two hours, I always waited three.
