wierd...

A bear mauled a couple horses over at Sunrise Arabians. Why would a black bear do that? They eat berries... Do you think it's rabid??? (They have not caught the bear)

bears eat both!!!omnivours both meat and veggies. bears eat rabbits, squirls, anything really. the horses must have been easy targets, and the bear just that hungry. how bad are the horses? scary to hear. about 10 tears there was a panther prowling around and we "caged" our horses in their stalls. wild life came out and set traps and a couple of days later they caught the panther. i would keep a very close eye on the horses behavior. they will tell you when something is up. be safe

oh good heavens!!! Poor horses :(
I have actually never heard of a bear randomly mauling horses....there was a bear that we saw at the last stables, but he wasn't interested in the horses.
It might have been rabid, so if they were my horses I'd definately get the vet out for rabie shots if needed...just to be on the safe side.

How close are you to that place, farmpony? You and your guys okay?

Farmpony, bears eat berries only in disney cartoons. :-) In nature they eat pretty much everything. Also they are very unpredictable and much more dangerous than, say, wolfs.

Stay safe!

I'm on the complete other side of the county. This side that the attack was on is actually the more populated side, maybe that is why? I don't know. I am way over by the river and I've seen bear and coyotes and bobcats, but they've never bothered us... maybe food is more plentiful on my side of the county?

It's very scary though........

Black bears aren't usually that agressive, but the spring and fall are their major feeding times. If they perceive that something else might be after their food or in their defined "food territory", they will attack. I've never heard of a rabid bear, but I'm sure it's possible.

I hope they catch it!!!

...well....

I called my trainer who has a friend that trains at that stables... It didn't happen there... it happened just a quarter of a mile away at another barn. And supposedly it wasnt a bear, it was a bobcat. But I know the girl that trains at that barn, and although she's a sweet girl, she's a HUGE story teller so... my geuss is that it was a dog... and I might even be able to geuss the breed and maybe even get the name of the dog if I wanted to be ugly.... but I won't go there....

A cat makes a whole lot more sense.
