Penicuik Hunter and Lass

Each year in my hometown, two people are chosen to represent the townsfolk in a massive parade, led by the two principals on horseback.

Penicuik Hunter and Lass

Guess who's going to be doing it this year?!

Congratulations.

Thanks, guys :-)

I should be getting to ride my flag horse tomorrow afternoon - he's a grey 17hh Irish Draft called Monarch. I may even have ridden him before in a lesson a few years back!

Meant to add that it's not just the parade I have to ride in: in total, I do SIX HOURS riding from about 8am until the parade in the afternoon. I also do another two hours during the mid-week ride which is seen as the passing of the torch from one Hunter to another.

And then there are a few more events that I have to ride in, too!

Good luck and enjoy!!!
They have something called the Sheriffs Ride in Lichfield, Staffs, UK that's an ancient tradition where the boundaries get ridden each year to retain ownership - not needed any more but still done. The Sheriff often goes by vehicle but the followers are all mounted and its usually used to be a mad free for all despite all efforts to keep it safe and controlled!!!
Ahhh the things I'm missing in the US!!!

Yeah, some of the other ride-outs have a bit of a reputation for being a mad hooning session!!

Here's my flag horse, whom I rode in a lesson (and a short hack) last night.

His name is Monarch, and he's a 16.2hh Irish Draft. He's a nice, dependable sort with a pretty comfy canter - thankfully!

He's lovely.
They used to hand out glasses of sherry at the end of the Sheriffs Ride - now that's a bad idea!!!

Apparently my family has to provide bacon rolls and champagne to the riders BEFORE we go out!

And the same applies to the Lass!
