Mare Over-grooming my gelding!!
My mare---a 1 1/2 year old Arab/Appy cross---has now completely licked or chewed off my geldings forelock. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I thought maybe there is something I could put on his mane that would repel her. He looks so ridiculous now---but I still think he's cute! He hasn't done anything to her mane at all---I'm not sure why she does this, and I haven't even seen her doing it, his forelock just faded away! I'm afraid if she keeps doing whatever she's doing, he'll end up with a bald spot on his forehead!! Help!!!!:???::shock:

You can spray something icky and smelly on his manes tail and forelocks, something you're mare dislikes.

It could be that it wasn't you mare after all. Could he have rubbed it off himself due to a skin problem, bugs, or just being itchy? Does the skin on his forehead look irritated or does he like you to rub/scratch that area? Just ideas.

You could try putting something nasty-tasting on that spot, (like hot sauce), but I'm not sure I would try it, as it might be bad for his hair & skin. :-)
There's a product out there that is supposed to help manes and tails grow back, and it's called MTG, or Mane and Tail Groom. Might be worth a try! Hope this helps.

I've heard of putting stuff on to stop them chewing. I hate to say I heard motor oil but don't hold me to it.
I wonder if the MTG might help stop them. Its oily and smells bad. Maybe just old bacon grease might help:?

Put them in different fields? I would be really annoyed if a horse were to do that to my boy. What about a mix of something really spicy you could put in his mane for a few days or a week or so. Give her a good taste for her habit.
