horse training schedule for off track TB
I have a new off track TB. I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion on a training schedule. How many days on, days off, what to work on, etc.
I just got my ottb a few days ago. He's almost 17 hands so he's a big boy and he has a wonderful temperament. I've ridden him twice. Yesterday he was very good. We did walk trot transitions and even cantered a few circles. No bucking or head throwing. He was great. The only negative was circling wide on the turns, especially to the right. I'm curious to know what type of schedule produced the best results. I'm riding english, I'm hoping to jump him when he is ready. Any advice would be appreciated.
There is a book out there called "Beyond the Track" that is written by the lovely people at New Vocations Racehorse Adoption... it goes over EVERYthing... it's a great read, very thorough... I HIGHLY recommend it... there are chapters and chapters about retraining an OTTB.

I just bought my first OTTB a little over a month ago.. that book has helped a ton.
Best of luck with your new partner!!
I just ordered the book... Thanks!
i got my in the fall and then i gave him all winter off except for ground work and such, i think that was the best thing for him. he was able to learn to relax.
then i started lunging and now we ride english he does great.
My horse already had a year and half off, and his ground work is already really good, and he lunges well. This is why I decided to go ahead and start riding him.
My boarding stable usually turns out the horses on a daily basis and my horse is going to start next week, has anyone had any increased training problems once they started turning out there horse. Aggression, more stubborn, etc?
Is the horse on stall board 24/7 right now?!
If so, then turnout will definitely help! I can't imagine my horse NOT getting turnout, he'd go crazy!
The boarding stable quarantines for several days after a new horse arrives. He'll be turned out this week for the first time.
How hard was is to get your ottb to pick up his right lead?
most will have troubles picking up the lead on the opposing racing side and the main cause is unbalance. they have never done any work in the opposite direction to racing therefore they become very one sided.
the idea is to wait until he is completely balanced in walk and trot before working on the canter. a lunge training system like the pessoa would be a great aid in helping with his frame and balance. they kinda go hand in hand :)
Does this book include ex-harness horses too? If it doesn't, does anyone know of a book that does?
