Is this a good mix of feed?

Right now my 1001lb 15.1hh quarter horse is getting 4-5 flakes of Bermuda and 2 flakes of alfalfa a day with 1lb of Natural glo by manna pro. I am trying to put weight on him due to losing weight at an old boarding place long story anyways I want to add BOSS ( Black oil sunflower seeds) And flax seed to his daily feeding . Im planning on feeding 1 and 1/2lb of Natural Glo, 1/2 to 1lb of BOSS and 6 or 7oz of flax seed all of course SLOWLY adding to so he doesn't colic. I want to add flaxseed to get more omega 3 in his diet because out here we have no pastures for grazing. After he puts on enough weight I will lower all the feeding amounts to a steady amount.

100 lb 15.2 HH QH? Do you mean 1000 lb maybe?

it says 1001 pounds thats what the weight tape says when i used it on him

You can go half and half alfalfa/ Bermuda. One pound natural glo and a cup of flax, and a vitamin/mineral supplement or a ration balancer. BOSS is high in omega-6's, cause inflammation. Flax instead is nicely balanced.
I personally feed ration balancer, flax and a mixed hay, free choice, in slowfeeder nets. Chubby horse is steadily losing weight, the perfect one is still perfect, is gaining muscle now and the new skinny guy is rounding out nicely.
I put oathay and orchard/ timothy in the nets and feed the alfalfa in a tub on the ground.
Works like a charm.

I Feed him free choice of Bermuda in a net but put down 4-5 flakes because that is how much I put in the net and some of it is still there the next morning. I know BOSS is high in Omega 6 I know lots of people that have has success putting weight on there horses with it. I was going to feed flax seed to help even out the Omega 3 and 6 ratio. And natural glo recommends 1 and 1/2lb for the work I do on him (Trails, barrels, rodeos). Im just trying to figure out how much flax and BOSS to feed so I dont have too much omega 6.

Also which kind of mineral/vitamin supp would you recommend?

deserthorsewoman 04-01-2013 09:18 PM

I'd wholeheartedly recommend any one of the ration balancers, whatever you can reliably find in your area. Purina has Enrich 12 and 32( depending on what hay you feed), Nutrena has Empower Balance, Triple Crown 30% is another, plus a bunch more regional one's. You feed between 1 and 3 lbs daily, plus whatever fat supplement you need to add for more energy. IF needed. Plus the flax. And the BOSS. Which I think is an overkill, the Natural Glo provides quite a few calories, flax is high fat, too.
I mix everything in a handful soaked alfalfa pellets.
If you're not familiar with ration balancer I have a link to learn all about them. Just let me know:-)

If the horse is not on fresh grass, he's already going to have an imbalance of omegas; rice bran and BOSS are both high in omega-6, as are most grains/pelleted feeds. Personally, I'd add flax seed (up to ~1 lb) and a ration balancer or multi-vitamin into the diet first and see if that does the trick before considering adding BOSS.

I decided not to feed BOSS right now just flaxseed and I will just be feeding it whole since now studies show that they can digest it perfectly fine and they get the same nutrients also alot cheaper then ground flax and less time consuming by grinding it everyday before I give it to him.
