Am i ready

I am wondering if i am ready for a 17in english saddle. i currently ride in a 16 and feel a little squished and ride a 15in for western. i am about 5ft 1in and have a longer torso. if you need any pictures let me know

I'd say yes. I think a 15" western converts to a 17" English.

You should be able to fit the palm of your hand flat behind your butt on the cantle. If there's not enough room to do this, then the saddle is too small for you.

The type of saddle affects the seat size, too. I'm 5'2" and would ideally ride in a 16.5" (for flatter seats, such as a jumping saddle) or 17" (for deeper seats, such as a dressage saddle)

With an english saddle, it's your thigh length that ultimately dictates the size. With you sitting in a chair with your leg at a 90 angle to the floor, measure from the back of you (as is you were sitting against a wall) to the front of your knee. If it's 21", you're a 17. If it's 23", you're a 17.5, etc.

Dressage saddles fit the length of the thigh (so I am 5'7" but ride in a 16.5 because of short thighs/long lower leg). Make sure that you are stretching into the heel from the hip/knee so see if it fits correctly. Depends upon the saddle however, with lots of (popular) thigh rolls today, it might go larger. Without them, less so.
