Winter Supplement!!!!!!! help...and post urs
Okay. My horse is growing out that nice fluffy winter coat now. woohoo lol. He'll be getting his clip in febuary or march i think..which is better?. So i want to know what you guys reccomend for supplements? I want a few things over the winter,
I want a hoof and Coat supplement, He has beautiful feet, ill post some pics after thursday's trim lol. But i want his coat to get really healthy over the winter. It gets very dull over the winter. At least it used to last year (but back then he wasnt mine and he was emaciated =( ) So now that he's with me and healthy, i want him on a nice supplement. I use hoof oils and whatnot so maybe just a coat supplement would do for that
Okay and the other important thing...maybe a muscle supplement? He just had his grain doubled, which is good because he wasnt gaining any weight for winter and he seemed a little skinny actually. He's clearly gained a bit and looks much better, so we'll keep it doubled during winter. But i want to get him on something to help him develope good muscle. He's been working very hard as much as i can with him. But i think a supplement would be just the boost of help he needs. Plus that might really help with his topline! Now i've heard of muscle supplements that like...aid in flexibility? but ive never seen one, or do they all do that?
maybe they make muscle and coat supplement combined? IDK if i wanna use like an overall supplement though it seems too general and he's def healthy.
So what do you guys think? any LINKS? what do you guys use? what works? what doesnt? Post all urs on here =D
Someone else posted this about coat enhancers Coat Enhancers
Has anyone tried it? it seems a little off to me, but if its leegit and works then it looks like a very good buy
This site also has something called Shark Legs
It looks nice as a muscle thing/ prevents lameness/ and improves flexibility? but what do you guys think?
im rele not sure about these products =/
I may not be of much help as far as links go, but this is my take. You need protein for muscle development, period.. Find something that is high in protein.
More grain isn't as important as more hay is when wintering a horse. They have to keep warm. Warmth comes from fiber, fiber is in hay.. If you can't feed more hay then I would suggest something like Beet Pulp to add fiber. Alfafa hay is good as well, but BP packs more of many thing. My bag has a comparison on it, I'll see if I can remember to fetch the numbers later.
Hoof supplements are not normally necessary if you are feeding the right foods.. Protein is important to their health as well.. My Trimmer feeds Hoof Secret and loves it, btw.. I don't know what all is in it so can't give you any help there. Maybe she will see this thread and comment. Topicals aren't really of much use on hoofs, btw.. Massaging the C-band is helpful for encouraging growth tho. ;)
For the coat BOSS(black oil sunflower seeds) which is a good omega 6, will help put a sheen on. Flax seed, which is an omega 3(not as available naturally in winter) will also put a shine on. There are processed supplements available, i can't think of the name of the one i want to recommend tho. LOL
Just do not over supplement. My horses get #1 HAY, lots of it, then some beet pulp, alfalfa pellets, sometimes BOSS and the 29 yr old blind horse gets Total Equine as well. All the others are fat so they do not get grain.
Btw, a long winter coat isn't going to shine.. Since you are clipping and will be blanketing if you use the shiney lined blankets that will also help with shine. So they say.
I do 4 to 6 oz of fresh ground flax seed. You have to buy ground stabilized flax or freshly grind it yourself with a coffee grinder...as the seeds are perishable...remember oil spoils. Flax has the omega fats as mentioned above...great for hair and hooves. As far as the muscle supplement...never heard of a muscle supplement per say...although Im sure there is one. Basically for muscle you need protein...and more work-outs.
That sounds pretty good. I think a good protein supplement will help a lot. I know thatll help with muscle for sure, plus i think itll be good for his feet. He has rele nice feet so im not too concerned about it. But the protien supplement will def be important over the winter. I've seen some flax seed / oil sort of supplements I think. Ima take a look at some online shops and see what they have as far as that goes...
How do some of these look? which looks best?
Hoof and Coat State Line Tack
State Line Tack Multivitamin
Maybe a joint supplement would help keep him loose and flexible.
Im thinking maybe the multivitamin one would be best since its like a full spectrum kind of thing??
ahhh i cant decide
We use Buckeye Ultimate Finish for great coat conditioning and weight. Our old guy gets 1/2 cup 3 times a day while our tubby ones get 1-2 oz. per day. They really shine in the summer and the UF has helped our old guy put on a lot of weight.
OK first off think of the big fat like me person you see with nasty hair ... why is our skin and hair nappy becasue we eat high sugar/starch diets (I wish I was as good about my diet as I am with my horses) ....
if you cut out the extra sugars and starches in the grains and build a diet around your hay and forage products you will have an overall healthier horse
take a peek at my ration balancer thread for some products in your area
what is his total diet now?? What feed how much how often?? Deworming up to date?? Teeth Floated??
i use a multi vid. -- really anything will do really ... then i use the B14 for her feet and it has worked wonders
