My big yard project, physical labor to sooth the soul.
Or at least make me tired enough I can sleep.
DH and I had started on this just before things went downhill with Hondo. I am now going to finish it myself to keep myself busy and out of the barn, just can't be out there at the moment.
So anyway, here's my project in early phase. I am adding a large koi pond (10'6" x 11") and stone patio around it in my front yard. Who knows how long this will take but it will be cool as all get out when it's done. DH wants to add a 'river' to it around the house to join up with the garden pond in the backyard, I think he is nuts and that is just way too much work - and water to avoid shooting grass into with the lawnmower so I vetoed that plan.
DH starting to dig the pond.
Initial dig, made it a bit larger and deeper once we got the shape down.
The shallow area is 2' and the lagoon is 4' so fish can winter in there with a pond breather - no fish in tanks in my house this next winter.
The shallows, all of the rock work I have done - it's kind of fun and like putting a puzzle together. This is the 4th pond I've done, 2nd of my own, 2 for others.
Next step will be to backfill around the waterfall - the box will be hidden when I'm finished, build up sidewalls and hide hoses and cords and then patio, plants and new fish.
Pretty much all the grass area will become a flat river rock patio.
from corner of covered porch to other deck will be patio
The "bad boy" falls & filter system, it will clean and cycle 5000 gallons per hour, the sound is amazing. My bedroom is behind the door on the covered porch. I have a feeling I will be sitting out there a lot in my pajamas with a cup of coffee.
While I was shopping for things for this project I was looking at fish. Holy shamoly they get expensive. No joke there are koi fish for sale for 12k and up! They come with 6 gen pedigrees just like a horse would. I won't be owning any prized koi stud fish, we'll be settling for the $10 a piece babies from petsmart
Wow you've been busy!! It's coming together well. When you are finished there, I wouldn't mind one out the back, I'll even supply you with tea and biscuits :)
Beautiful, I see a few "Bonfire Patio Peach" trees in the background.
Lol, I'm always busy but in fairness DH had last week off of work (staycation to work on projects). You get me a plane ticket maple and I'm on it!
You sure do TC. They were a gift from my grandma last year. Also have patio donut peaches, a plum (not sure what variety) and a pluot.
I love it!! Don't spend a lot of money on the fish, they are an easy meal for raccoons and other predators. My mother has an ornamental pond and she just stocks it with colorful goldfish.
It is lovely! My mother used to have an insanity for gardening and ended up with a three level tiered garden with a waterfall down the center if all three tiers and a koi pond at the bottom. I remember it was absolutely stunning when lit up at night. Yours is going to turn out beautiful methinks! Good luck and post pictures!

First off... beautiful! I will have to fly you here when I buy my house so you can do my koi pond! lol
Second... who in the <beep> would pay $20k for a freaking fish?! I refused to believe it until I went and looked it up and came across this Eldon Koi
Sounds like a plan to me and maybe a xc lesson or 2 while I'm there! I was in shock when I saw the prices too. Some of them are really pretty but why? It's a fish. You can't even pet the stupid things let alone have them do something useful.
ETA: But I must admit, I did entertain the thought of being a color breeder...of halter fish. Profit margin much?
Sounds like a deal to me. Plan your trip for September, 2014. You can come for the wedding to party and build my koi pond and get xcountry lessons. You shall be a busy girl
Coloured halter fish breeder... hmm... you know...you may be on to something there!
