remind me - signs and symptoms of EPSM/PSSM
I have been thinking about my filly and how nutritionally sensitive she is.
Then I got to thinking. High fiber, high fat, low protein/carb feeds are fine. Anything with too much protein or too much carbs, and she's lame. She's cold-backed and girthy, and on any amount of grain, she gets low grade chronic laminitis. She is absolutely a-ok on foods she "can have", not a lame step in sight in over a month now. Coming up on two.
She's two and a half years old and lightly started, going beautifully and presently in very light work. Obviously quite green and unbalanced but gets more balanced with every ride. The only correllation between work and soundness is that she seems to be sounder when she's working than when she's not and often warms out of lameness if I push her through it. She's unraced, was unbroke when I got her.
Is stabled as of two days ago because a friend's gelding injured himself badly and has to be on box rest, and needs company. She was box rested for her stifles a while back but it did nothing and if anything made her worse. She's sounder in the pasture, but presently is suffering no ill effects from being confined. She does get brief turnout, and would get more but it just isn't possible [I put her out in the morning and bring her back in around lunch time, my gelding is in while she's out and he's severely claustrophobic so can't be in long].
IIRC the EPSM/PSSM diet is high fat high fiber, low protein low carb, right?
So... what are the signs and symptoms of the disease? I knew once but can't remember for the life of me. Would it be worth pulling some hairs and sending them off for PSSM1 testing?
Anything I haven't covered let me know.
Old Horse Lady has a lot of info and has a thread that's quite recent
Mmm search won't work for me for some reason, probably my computer being a pain in the butt as per usual. Otherwise I would just have searched.
Here's the link to her threads
4horses your link didn't work.
Jaydee, there's a very good chance it is my computer, it's a pest lol. But yeah, there could be some gremlins too.
You can also click on her name and go to the statistics tab then click on " Find threads started by her". There are several of them like you are looking for there.
Here, see if this link will get you there for ease.
Nope Roadyy, that link doesn't work either :/
