Sore back? Girth sore?
So when I'm trying to tighten my horses girth he will pin his ears and try to bite but I can decide weather it's the saddle or the girth. My saddle is to wide but I have a fleece works and that works really well. Help me decide what one it is?! And I've checked for soreness but he doesn't have a reaction of pain or anything.
Do you tighten his girth all at once? Make sure you only put it on the loosest setting when first tacking up, then stretch his front legs forward to make sure there is no skin pinched in his armpit behind his shoulder. Then you can gradually tighten the girth (make sure your saddle hasn't slipped and that the pad is pulled up into the gullet so it isn't putting pressure on his withers). It is best to tighten 1-2 holes at a time, and then walk him forward a few steps between each tightening. Give it one last check before getting on.
If you think it is saddle fit, you could post some pictures of how the saddle sits on his back- both with and without the fleeceworks pad, girthed and un girthed and everyone on here will be better able to help you. Does his back show signs of tenderness or soreness (flinching when you run your hand down either side of his spine?)
I do what you said with the tightening it slow normally. And so no I don't tighten it all at once and I do stretch his legs bc of the skin getting pinched and he's needs the stretching. I will get pictures in the next few days. And no shows no signs of soreness or tenderness I check for it every time I ride. And I know my saddle fits with the fleece works pretty well but I may be wrong (I've had other people check it to and they agree it fits with it)
A pad or blanket can't really make up for a poorly fitting saddle as it applies pressure where it shouldn't. Is it coming down on his withers? Do you check about 10 min after you've been riding to see that there is still good clearance - 3 fingers stacked vertically.
