Remember when?

Okay, I know I am not THAT old. However I am old enough that I look back at the fads from when I was just a young whippersnapper and I can't help but almost pee myself laughing knowing I used to wear and use these things.

I had this one in the late 80's

I had this helmet in the early 90's

I had this one somewhere in there too...

I still have a worse one from the 70s  but obviously not in use!

As a child I was given some hand-me-down jodphurs that had the huge wind shaped thighs - very funny!

A bit like these http://www.etsy.com/listing/89031559...ool-pant-suede

Oh hand me down jods were scary... I had a pair of hand me downs that were the wind shaped thighs as well  I only wore them once and got made fun of and never wore them again. That would have been in the 80's. My Mom was so mad at me

Anyone remember the beater balls we used for massages? They were bouncey balls on sticks and you beat your horse with them. I know they are not THAT old but we were doing a tack room clean up last year and came across a set of them and the kids were baffled and horrified at the thought of using them lol.

Yep, I wouldn't wear them either and they were n't that comfy to ride in anyway.

I also grew up with quilted blue or green "riding jackets" - only colours you could get (maybe black and brown, but I don't remeber seeing any).

Thankfully I didn't have to endure the quilted jackets. But there were some horrid trends floating through the hunter ring in my pony days for shirts and jackets.

I love the fact the UK still sticks to the traditional jackets and colours for showing.

Hopefully some trends still last. I currently show wearing my mother's Der-Dau boots, Tailored Sportmans, and hunt cap that she wore over 30 years ago, haha.

They do look smart in the show ring and you do have to get it just right, but I don't like how inflexible the traditional judges are - they usually don't apporove of any of your modern new fangled synthetic saddles and will mark you down for having one.:?

My first pair of tall boots came with boot garters.

For those of you too young to remember, this was in the pre-everybody has custom made boots days, and they were to keep your tall boots from falling too much.

My next pair had patent leather tops. Yikes! (Still technically correct for a rider who has earned their hunt colors or formal wear, but everyone stopped wearing them after George Morris said they created another horizontal line and made your leg appear shorter.)

I also showed once as a junior in canary britches and a tweed frock style coat (nipped in waist and big flaired skirts.) I have had all the helmets that the OP posted, as well as the derby on a leash for formal hunting.

I also remember the ratchatcher shirts with the ties made out of the same fabric, anyone remember them?

Or the chokers for a ratcatcher in a contrasting color?

How about rust britches? I show my roan horse in rust britches with a gray jacket with a rust pinstripe and thought I was stylin! I had grey britches for showing other horses, they were a big fad in the 80s!

Also rolled tack, which I thought was hideous.

I'll keep thinking, maybe look through some photos, I'm sure I've got more.

I love these! I'm too young to have experienced most of these fads, but I did have a helmet as a little kid like the second one you posted with the huge oval on the chin strap. It's still hanging on the mantle along with a collection of miniature fillis irons, lol!
