Planning future vaccines and vet appts
Hi everyone!
So last year my mare had a big situation with osteoarthritis and the vet spent a lot of time with her. Of course, it was focused on the situation at hand... they spent a lot of time with her, but it wasn't technically a physical.

When should I have my next appointment? Are these typically every year?

Also, I vaccinated my horse with a 5 way and West Nile in December (a little later than I hoped). When should I vaccinate her again? How often are these vaccinations?

Thank you!

Do you have a smart phone? I highly recommend the app: Equi Sketch Records. I put in my horses info and it calculates when her next shots, farrier, worming, etc are due. You can change the schedule a needed...but you get alerts when it's getting close to being due.

I only have one horse to track, but it's can do multiple horses and has been invaluable to me as a first time owner.

Is it worth the $10?

my vet sends me a post card when mine are due, I take both in twice a year.

Does it have to necessarily be every 6 months or...? I didn't know if I needed to have it done now since it's Spring, or...

Thanks :)

It has really helped me keep track of everything. From feeding schedules to shots and maintenance. I have found it worthwhile, but I am pretty new to ownership and I admit freely, I'm still learning. This app has taken all the guesswork out of horse care for me. I've been using it for the year we've owned our horse and have never missed her maintenance. I board, so it also helps me keep my BO on track ;). I let her know that Acey is due for a trim so I can get on the farrier schedule...I ask her how much for shots and/or wormer since Acey's due.

Your mileage may vary, but I love it. I even purchased the sister app for my other pets: Equi Sketch Pets.

My vet said that if you aim to vaccinate between March and May, then you really only need to do it once a year because vaccinations are good for 9 months to a year and this way you're covered during those critical months when mosquitoes and other things are most prominent. If you haven't vaccinated in a while or don't know the history of your horse, then a booster is recommended 4-6 weeks after your first vaccination but once you've got that out of the way, once a year is fine. I vaccinate my own horses (except for rabies since TX won't allow you to) and I just did them last week. We're good for the year.

I vaccinated in December which is an awkward time of year it seems, so what would I do in that case? Thanks.

As far as I know, the two vaccines that are sometimes recommended again in the fall are rhino and flu so if it makes you feel a little safer, you could at least repeat those two in Aug/Sept and then wait till next spring to do another complete 5way and westnile. I'm not a vet of course so I'm just saying how I would personally handle that one. You may want to ask a vet just to be sure, especially since vaccines are kind of area specific. :)
