Land Clearing Question...probably as boring as it sounds...

Ok...we just bought land in east texas. We are planning on clearing trees. Some trees have already been cleared but the ground seems to be soft and my horse sinks in...sometimes dangerously...about 8 inches in the soft ground. What is the best way to remove trees and how would we deal with the soft spots? We have a tractor with a loader and mower. Do we need a disc harrow thing?
