I'm just starting out jumping with my 16 hand appy/quarter.. anyways, My friend has jumps that i jump her on but at home i don't have anything except a couple "tiny" trees that have fallen out in the pasture. Is there any way i can set up jumps by things laying around? or an easy way to build a couple? What do you use? Any information would be awesome :D
A few buckets is usually a good start. For the poles you can try to find a few good wooden ones, but I've heard of people using PVC pipes.
I also used old tires for standards, that way you can stack them as high as you want.
Cinder blocks, buckets, milk crates....you can use PVC pipe to put across them...
Buckets, crates, anything really lol. There's plenty of things to make jumps out of!
just go for it. get creative with stuff laying around like mentioned above! the more elaborate the better. especially if you plan on show jumping. you want ur horse use to as much as possible.
you can use anything you want to. i used to set the rail on the fence. i know that is not safe, but it taught me how to jump. and now because of that i'm Grand Champion.
thanks : )
I went out and set up a water tank(blue barrel cut in half) and then took a block of wood and put it on the other side, and then took 3 boards, took the two biggest ones and put them up as cross poles... and the third one under them.. Sully jumped right over it like it was nothing.. lol
One thing just to be careful of is the weight of the things you use as poles. If you notice traditional jump ones are very heavy, basically if you knock it, it will fall. But with some PVC ones they can just blow off or if you hit them fly forward in your path, and if your horse landed wrong on one it could be bad.
Tires are good for sides of jumps, and solid cross country style jumps can be good too
I use to use buckets and a broom lol. Anything is really possible.
For poles, you could use things like brooms, lightweight plastic pitchforks, mops, etc. You could also have jumps that don't involve poles.. for example, you could set two hay bales next to each other, pile some horse blankets on top of each other, etc.
