Aires' mane is disgusting this spring. It's horribly tangled and no amount of brushing is doing any good. I'm considering just hacking it all off and starting from scratch. Thing is, he absolutely WILL NOT tolerate clippers (have tried desensitizing him to the for the past two years with no luck...have even gotten kicked/pawed for my trouble). Is it possible to roach a mane without clippers? Also, he's got such a cute, rock star forelock...would that have to go, too? Posted via Mobile Device
There are other ways to do it. You can use kids scissors, where the edges are round. Normally you leave the forelock for fly protection. However if you cut off the mane it will look super bad when it grows back. What I would do is use calm coats shine and detangler. I spray it in my horses tail once a week, it does wonders. Also try keeping the mane braided, this will keep it from getting tangled. Just changed out the braids every week or two.
I planned on trimming his mane for WP this year, anyway, but he's got this ridiculous mohawk of 2" long hairs going on sporadically down his mane that grow in clumps. His mane is also super coarse because he's half draft. His tail is getting braided and bagged (or at least tied up) unless we're at a show. It's ridiculously thick and reaches the bottoms of his fetlocks. Posted via Mobile Device
I always love the 'shock and awe' factor when you do it from other people too. Other people would die before doing it to thier horses, but agree that Belle looks fabulous.
It's quite humorous if you don't let those things bother you, even if it ends up looking rediculous. It will always grow back and Aires really won't mind it as much as you or anyone else....promise.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about him. Lol. Gonna have to get a step ladder and the boyfriend's help. Bum shoulder and 16.2hh horse don't mix sometimes. Lol Posted via Mobile Device

That mane is an easy fix for WP. All you need is about 2 inches of even mane. Band it and put a sleazy on him, it will lie flat & look good. I had a 3 yr old QH with the same mane, I got a good 2 inches at it's shortest point, so that's what I cut it off at, neatened it up with scissors, banded it really tight and put a sleazy on him, looked excellent the next morning for the show.
I roached one of my mare's manes. I used a fetlock scissors. I cut it to about 1.5-2 inches long and left it for a couple days then came back and roached it all the way once the short hairs were standing straight up. Made it a lot easier to make it nice & even.
My mare looked great with it roached but now I maintain about a 1.5" mohawk that is even better!
Kato, there's a pic of my boy on the previous page. He basically looks like a smallish Percheron with loud black and white pinto coloring. Do you think he'd look ok/good with a roached mane? Posted via Mobile Device
Has that nice drafty build I love! As long as his neck is as substantial as the rest of him looks to be I think he would look great roached. If you don't like it at least it grow back, and he will be cooler until it does.
Kato, he's got a nice, thick neck that is proportionate to the rest of him...except his head. Lol. His head looks like it belongs on an 19hh Clydesdale (minus the roman nose).
Smrobs, I hadn't thought of those! That's a good idea. He's gotten to the point where if he even sees the electric clippers, he gives me a nasty look like "Don't even think about it." He's such a goon. Posted via Mobile Device
Comic has a thin mane that I hate. I'm hogging it this spring. Was going to do it today but it was raining and yucky. Might have to wait a couple of weeks. I'm also hogging my mini geldings mane. he has a super thick mane that hangs half way to the ground. It's a pain to keep clean and brushed out. It's going bye bye.
