scary wash rack
I just purchased an ISH last week and he arrived at the barn Friday. I have been trying to let him get acclimated and settled before doing anything, so he has only gone out to graze and was lunged for a few minutes today. He came from a smaller barn and the wash racks at my barn are a bit smaller than where he came from.
It took a good 10 minutes to coax him into the wash rack today after some rearing, head throwing, and flat out refusals...but I thought he had settled down. After about 5 minutes of being in the cross ties he freaked out, trying to rear and pull the ties from the wall. I am afraid it will be a bad experience for him and he will always be fearful of the rack...not very convenient for either of us.
Are there any other area of the barn he is uncomfortable at? Try washing him outside in the open , just to see if he just doesn't bath well. It could be something is scary in you wash pit to him. I would then try to do a daily grooming in the pit until he becomes more comfortable. Maybe in a week or two try the bath again.
I tried again today and found the culprit to be the hose and the hose rack mounted on the wall. He scooted as far into the wall as possible to get away from it. So, we will gradually increase his amount of time around the hose until he's comfortable. For now, my BM has put some cross ties in the aisle for us.
I know no one really responded, but just wanted to update you!
