Alrighty, so I am preppring my mare for a early spring show! And I'm on to getting her ears done. I know many people don't like it due to bugs, but we've always kept fly masks on all spring/summer/fall till the bugs so away again.
Does anybody have any tips/tricks on how you do your horses? I did the inside, then along the very edge of the outside- if that makes any sense! But I only have done it once myself, as my Mom has always done the ear clipping. And last time, it didn't quite look right. So how do you guys trim yours? And how long before a show?
I am like you, I trim the inside then the outside. I place a cotton ball in the ear because I trim the hair downward. I also use the pocket trimmers. Easier to get in the small spaces and much less noisy.
I trim ears at least a week out and touch-up the day before.
I don't really cut all the hair out but I just cut the hair that sticks out. I don't show or anything so I don't really have to cut all the hair. :)
I take small clippers and flatten the ear agaisnt my hand and clip upwards (can normaly do an ear in 1 go) then pinch ear sides together and run clippers up the edge.
I clip everything, inside, outside, the whole ear. Then when I am showing I use a shiny fly repellent wipe on the inside, makes the horse look very sharp. Only takes about a week or two for the hair to grow back as well.
I recently did my first ear trimming job. Cupped the ear with my hand, went up the one edge and down the other, and just trimmed anything the protruded out from the inside. Looked pretty good.
Subbing! My new boy has never had his ears trimmed that I know of but I need to for an event coming up. How do you guys go about keeping them calm and getting them use to it? My old horse always had to be twitched and I'd rather not have to put my new guy through all that man handling over having his ears done lol any suggestions?

My horse can be a little nuts with his ears. When I'm just doing the outside, he twitches his ears like it tickles, then he tries to giraffe me and sometimes tries to get me off the ladder.
It's really funny with him, though. I'll give him a firm talking-to to just say, "Take a chill pill, I'll be done quicker if you cut the crap."
He seems to listen, surprisingly. You can also try cotton balls.
