Weighted Romel Reins
I have a question about weighted romels... I recently purchased this set of romel reins from sstack Dura-Tech® Weighted Romel Training Reins for local open showing. My arabian has been ridden WP most of his life (in romels) and although we're getting into dressage among other things, I would like to keep his old training in-touch as well. My question is... when weighted romels are attached to a curb, does it cause any stress in the horse's mouth/on the bars? I am pretty new to the arab world and so forgive me if the question is a little naive! I understand that romels are weighted to steady the rein, allow subtle movements to be relayed to the horse's mouth and primarily to encourage leg/seat use in classic WP fashion.
Thoughts? Anyone knowledgeable on the subject? Thank you!
Bumpity! Anyone? :)
I've used weighted reins many times, not romels, just custom made split ones. Great for a steady horse that likes subtle cues and there is no stress whatsoever I have seen. I have a set of romels like you linked, mine are about 30 years old, however they are not weighted.

If you're wanting to get into dressage I would not use a weighted romel. I have those training reins and hardly ever use them, I've found many horses respond better to not having the weight. The weights do 2 things, they steady the reins so they don't flop around when you're riding (good) and they can really cause a bit to become a lot harsher than it would be alone, especially with a heavy handed rider(bad). If you can plant your hand over the horses withers/saddle horn and use only your legs and seat for cues, then they're fine. If you have to use the reins/bit because your horse gets spooked or acts up, you're reaction can go from mild (unweighted reins) to really harsh (the heavier the rein the more harsh the bit will be if you get wild with your hands). IMO, if you're not training to show WP competitively, I wouldn't use these reins.
