What should I do with his mane?

Okay show folks.

I am planning on taking my 7-yr-old and my 2-yr-old to just a couple local horse shows this summer. I primarily barrel race, but I like my horses to be well-rounded "thinkers" --- not running hotheads.

Both of my horses have long natural manes. I am NOT going to pull their manes for a small local get-some-experience shows. I'll also be doing showmanship, reining, and competitive trail, along with western pleasure.

So I was wondering is it better to leave their manes long "as is"? Or should I band them like some of these examples:

If you are going to keep it long, I think those braids/bands look pretty awesome!

I would band it, I think it would help complete the overall "finished product" look. I LOVE that second banding job!

I would do a banding like the second picture. The first one is a row too cluttered IMO.

Okay. Wasn't sure what would be better from the judges perspective. I did think banding it would give it that "neat" look.

I may not be there to win it big, but I still want to present as nicely and polished as I can!

The second band job is the way to go. Like someone else said....the first one is too cluttered and actually looks more like a Morgan, Arab, ASB type thing.

I like the first one, but they are both very good!
But if the first one does work out, maybe find some ties that are closer to the horse's mane color.

The only thing I am concerned about with braiding is that my 2-yr-old's mane is THICK. And I mean THICK! (Which is a good thing, I guess!) I'll have to do a practice band or two, because I'm afraid it would stick out in the air, because it's too thick to lie flat.

What I've done and it's helped, was a tip from an old trainer. Mist the hair or wet it down a bit. Makes it easier to braid and brand so it's not as thick. I was told to do so with show sheen or cowboy magic, but sometimes the hair slips. I just use water and / or mix of that depending on the show.

Good luck! (:

The shows aren't for a couple months, so maybe if I remember then, I'll post pictures! (Or if I practice before then.)
