Does senior feed help older horses gain weight?
I was just curious about senior feed for horses/ponies and wondered if it helped older horses gain/ keep weight on.
My pony that I've had 9.5 years turned 30 this past October and both myself and my mom have noticed she's not keeping weight like she used to. The vet just came out tonight and gave her a look over for me and said she was on the skinny side but said it was just because she was older now. Right now I feed her three times a day- Morning ( about 5:30 AM), when I get home from school (about 3:30) and Night (7 pm ). Would a senior feed help her gain weight? My mom isn't big on supplements because they cost so much but I'm wondering if they might help her gain and keep more weight on. Any ideas?
For gaining weight on an older horse (or any horse in general) I swear by beet pulp and senior grain. For even more calories you can add up to a cup of corn oil in the feed per day.

Okay, I will mention that to my mom :)
We used corn oil with her old horse to help him gain. he was 200 pound under weight and by the summer his old owners didn't even recognize him! Thanks for the help! :)
