New Male Rider .. "Cup"
Hi - Newbie here again.
Have finally started learning cross poles at a canter ;-) My 2 point is not still as strong as it needs to be, and a couple of times it was a little tender coming down on my front.
Is it normal or good idea for men to wear a cup when doing jumping .. I do have a feeling if I'm back far enough from the pommel like I'm supposed to be it might not be as big of an issue ... but need to ask. All the instructors and most (90%) of the riders at my barn are females.
No, you don't need a cup... lol.
Just work on your two point more and also make sure your stirrups are short enough. My jumper coach has us doing trot and canter laps around the ring without stirrups in two point. It is pure hell on the body but it will certainly make you stronger in the long run + help find your balance. Also make sure you're not throwing yourself out of the saddle over jumps. When some people are learning to jump they have a tendency to rise higher out of the saddle than necessary which also sucks for the horse since they end up slamming back down.
I suppose if you are getting hurt to the point where it's uncomfortable then a small cup might help until you're able to jump cleanly. I wouldn't advice wearing one in breeches though, it would probably look funny and bring unwanted attention to you from other riders. :P
Do you have the same problem when trotting jumps or just at the canter?
No trouble at all in the trot. I THINK I have a tendency to go too far forward when I go up into jump.
I just need LOTS of 2 point strengthening and practice. I know I have to catch meself from standing in the stirrups.
Question - Riding two point without stirrups still feels VERY difficult -- almost like I'm barely out of the saddle at all. Should I ramp up back/core exercises and thigh exercises ... suggestions?
I'm turning 46 on Friday .. I've come a long way in 8 months ... but it's TOUGH .. but also fun and rewarding.
Lots more no stirrup work! ;)

Lots and lots of 2-point work and no stirrup work. I don't want to be inappropriate so please don't take offense but my boyfriend says it helps to wear underwear that keep the boys together and not flopping around. Saxx brand seem to be good he says...
Lots of core stability work as well as squats and working on your balance. :)
Being a guy teaches you not to lean forward very quickly... I have never worn a cup nor has anyone else I have met that rides. I ride in trunks/boxer briefs but last time I wore compression shorts which were the best.
I would say to do more squats/leg excersizes but also a lot of core excersizes. Good luck! I'm also just learning jumping after riding english for 10 months. Good luck!
