Locked Stifle or Ligament Tear
My 3 yr. old thoroughbred was found stumbling and losing her balance one day in her stall. The vet dx it as locked stifle. After this she showed no more signs of extending the leg backwards with the toe under. Instead that hind leg would have a spasm in it periodically. (Like a shock wave going down her leg). The gaskin and stifle area were a bit swollen, sometimes painful to touch, no heat to the area ever. Called for a second opinion. This vet thinks it could be a partial tear of the ligament. Rural area so no availability for ultrasound or xray to verify. Very different treatment for both. I've had her for 2 weeks, no known injury, past owner is very surprised about all this (she was last raced last in Nov). Any thoughts on this one???
Hi my name is stacy, i work at a jumping yard, 1 of the horses that look after has a sticking stifle, it does not cause too much of a problem, my boss competes him quite alot still, the only thing is that he can't jump anything higher than 1.20m courses sometimes does bigger classes, but only every now and then, its my boss that chooses not 2 do more cos of safely of her and the horse, horse has no problems jumping the height he does, it just means he will only go so far and stay at that level, its not a prob if u only want to go that far and have lots of fun at that level.
Just thought i should let u know, that if your horse does have a sticking stifle, its not all bad! Hope i've helped u out just abit?
Thanks so much for that input. I have decided to keep her, let her rest her young bones for a couple months and then in springtime we will get to work. I learn more about my options and know what to do then. If anything, this horse is teaching me more than any other I have had.
Have a Happy New Year.
Good i hoped i helped a little, u know when u have the right horse for u, no matter what, hope it all works out ok 4 u both!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALSO.
