Don't know what to do.......Job.
I just don't know what to do. Things at my job are just getting ridiculous. As officers, we are now being treated worse than the inmates. Our administration is more concerned with getting people fired than keeping the inmates under control. They have constricted what we can bring to work to the point that if you bring a sandwich, each topping must be in it's individual ziploc. They change things every day and I will show up to work only to find out that something I have been taking for four years is no longer allowed. I even had to throw my Chapstik away the other day because all of a sudden they don't allow any chapstiks that don't have a clear tube. 3 days later, its like "oh, never mind, chapstik are ok". I know that seems petty for me to get mad over something like that but it was like that was the last straw. I came so close to telling them to just kiss my a** and walking out. Now I am looking for another job closer to home doing something closer to my passion which is of course riding horses and working cattle. I am looking at a feed lot riding pens. I have not talked to them to see what they pay or what benefits they have, but at this point I don't care. I just want out and would take nearly any job to get closer to home and just get away from where I am working now. Whatever I do will probably be a pretty big pay cut and won't have the insurance or retirement that I am paying into now but I am just so fed up. :"( I figure that I could train a young horse or two a month to just kinda supplement my paycheck and used properly, a feedlot can make some really nice horses but I just don't know what to do. Sorry, I just needed someplace to vent and I am hoping that someone can give some advise to ease my troubled mind.:-(
I can feel for you. my son in law and daughter both worked for
the state of Ohio prison system. My daughter had a couple of yrs
and my SIL had over 10 yrs in when they both quite. And I
can not blame them for wanting out. They worked at a max security
prison and things they told me the prisoners do to the guards, well
lets just say using a taser on them would be fun. but they were not
allowed to touch them, just put them on report. Big deal, what are they going to do to them, lock them up.
Do you work for the state for one of the private prisons? Would you be qualified to go to work for say a sheriffs department or other law enforcement agency.
One thing for sure is find another job before you resign from this one,
the way things are going, finding another job is going to be really hard
I think in the coming future. And finding one to make a living with is going to be even harder.
Thanks for your reply. I work for the state, not a private prison. Luckily, I only work for a minimum security unit so I don't have to worry about many of the things that your family did. I am qualified to work for a sheriff's office or police department but I want totally out of that line of work. I'm tired of dealing with the "scum of the earth". I do know that I need to have something else set up before I leave this one. My brother used to work at a feed lot and I know that they are always looking for good help. Also, I don't think the cattle business is going anywhere because people won't stop eating steaks and hamburger so I am hoping that job will be a fairly secure one. As for the pay, I know that it will be a good size cut but living expenses where I want to go are about 1/3 of what I pay now. Instead of 800 for rent, you can find 250. Also, the lot might have homes on site for less than that but I won't know until I talk to them.
One thing for certain is that having to deal with the stress
of a job you are no longer happy with is a killer.
I myself have been in a couple of jobs that I completely burned out in
and I was miserable and made others miserable too.
As I get older i find out I am not as willing to put up with all the BS sometimes and move on to other less stressful jobs.
I wish you the best of luck in your job search, I have also found out
that the pay is sometimes not worth your health. doing a job that you
are happier with actually makes you work harder at it .
May I suggest emergency medicine? You obviously work well under pressure and even tho it's a different environment of work I think you should look into EMS. The job itself doesn't pay as it much for the career description but the rewards are there like no other. You won't find another position where you will come home at night and be as proud about what you do as this.
If I can help you swing into that direction at all, let me know :)
I appreciatel that my2geldings but the medical field would never work for me. I can deal with blood and guts fine but when it comes to broken bones, they would need another stretcher for me. LOL! Ever since I broke my arm, I just can't deal with that. I accidentally came across a picture of an inmate's broken arm the other day from where he had fallen off a ladder and landed wrong. I nearly passed out while puking in my supervisor's office. Now that I have had a couple of very strong drinks and a couple good nights sleep, things don't seem quite so bad but I still want out. I probably won't start looking seriously until early next spring because that is when my lease runs out on my apt. Every thing will work out, it always does. It may just take more patience on my part and lots of time with my horses so I can cope for a couple more months. Thanks for all your support.
Plus I have no patience for whiney people. Coldhearted I know, but after 41/2 years of working with inmates (most of whom are like really big whiney kids) I just want to get away from people too. If I could make a living training horses, then I would. But, in our area it would be hard because of the economy and I don't train horses to show. Mostly I train just good broke ranch horses. There is not too much call for that here. Most cowboys train their own regardless of how bad they do it.
Have you taught of security at the hospitals?
No, I hadn't thought of the hospitals but I am very familiar with all the hospitals here and they have to deal with just as much crap as I do at my job. I am going to talk to the manager of the feed lot I am looking at in the next couple of days and will find out then if it will even be worth my time to apply. Until then, I have my cats here and my horses at my dad's place to keep me from totally losing it. :) I really want to get out of the security and law enforcement thing and get a job where I don't have to deal with people so much. I have never really liked people in general, I always got along better with animals.
