I use a Shop Vac and a rechargeable Black & Decker car vac on my lot - you have to desensitize them to it though - not a lot more noise than clippers and they seem to enjoy it!!

if not, I have heard that giving a bath then take a shedding brush to the horse helps.

Don't clip at this time of year - you'll be clipping into his summer coat as well
If you find shedding a pain every year then clip his winter coat out once its grown and then again at the end of December/early January. Just remember that if you do that you're committed to blankets & neck covers and probably night stabling depending on where you live
