What dewormer?

Hi I was wondering what kind/brand of dewormer I should use on my horse--he's almost two. how do I know how much to give? I heard that weight tapes arent accurate... What is the best time of year to deworm?

The best thing to do is to talk to your vet to find out what is best in your area.

It depends on what kind of worms your horse has. If you get a fecal done by your vet, you can know exactly what kinds of worms he has and what to treat them with, so you won't be pouring needless chemicals into his body :)

In my area we worm twice a year. Generic Ivermectin paste in the spring then EquiMax paste with Praziquantel for Tapeworm. But, like others said, this is what works in our area. I know some people worm every 2-3 months but we've never needed to. Why worm when you don't need to?

I do know that Quest wormer you have to be VERY careful to stick to the dosing amounts listed so you'll need to know how much he weighs. Other brands you should still not just shoot the whole tube but you can guess a little more on weight. You just don't want to give a 900lb horse wormer for 1350lb of horse.

I'm somewhere else and follow a different program. We got lots of nasty stuff here and.... let's say that the vet's and labs are not .... they ...... are not the best for local stuff.

I go to supply place.

I buy three of everything that they have for three horses and treat every 3 months with a different product.

All the same but not the same.

All get treated EVERY three months AND rotating what I can find and bought.

NO problem... (Missed a treatment by 2 months and the ticks ... I can NOT describe)

Using different products may help with the changing infestations of your fields and (hay) and helps your horse combat some nasty stuff.

I'd NEVER stay with only one.

I agree with getting a fecal test done and using that to guide your decision. I get an FEC done every 3 months and deworm twice a year- once when my whole barn does Ivermectin, and once with Quest Plus to get any tapeworms (which won't show up in the FEC). My horse's FEC has always come up clean, but if it ever doesn't I'll deworm accordingly.
