Does your life revolve around riding?
Ive recently been giving a fantastic opportunity. I've been given a few horses to ride and show. They are trained horses that just dont get ridden often enough. And they're both horses that the owners are planning next fall. They are willing to free lease me their horses on the condition that each horse is ridden 3 days a week, and shown at least once a month during the summer.
I would be working Monday-Friday, and heading to the barn right after work and not getting home till about 7. Then being at the barn for about 4 or 5 hours on sunday.
Do any of you ride 6-7 days a week and compete as well?
If so, what are some pros and cons that youve noticed?
I was riding two hours a day twice and day 7 days a week. Sometimes just one ride a day that would last 6 or more hours. If I was going to show the rides would stop for training ... the both of us.
My horse and I (late 50' and now 61) have a great time and both of us in good shape in every way.
I've been a little ill for the last few months and not riding much and we BOTH have gained weight and are irritable. We will have to start back up slow and easy but will get back to those 6 hour rides. And I do MEAN slow and easy. Grabbing a horse (or me) that has not been worked and galloping for 2 hours can kill one or both.
My wife stills works but she would join me every now and then. She understands that the horses need to be tended to, worked and ridden.
Friends? I'm the best grumpy old man that you can find and I prefer the company of my horse and a long ride in the hills with very few around. I think that my Sereno thinks so too.
But you have brought up a different issue and THAT is one that you have to work out and having to balance YOUR desires and keep those around you to be OK with that.
I wish you luck. (hint? If your family and friends can not understand ... then get new ones that do.)
Friends are replaceable, my family is not :/
If horses are what you are passionate about then yes it is worth it.
I spend every waking minute I'm not in class working at the barn. Ride both mine, often ride a couple other of the training horses, and in summers I am down there almost all day every day doing whatever needs done whether it be cleaning stalls or riding a colt.
I wouldn't have it any other way to be honest. I have friends at the barn and I can still go out at night if I want. Horses can get a day off that won't kill them if there's a holiday or a birthday for family.
IF your family is family...
If they don't like what you are doing then.... YOU do what you think is best. I may take some time.
Ya know something? My wife is great. Ya want to know something else? I ride in the hills and out-back in a third world country. My BEST times are meeting up with this kinda of guy and we ride together for awhile. My Spanish is not that good but we don't need to talk much.
One is the wrong photo but I think I found the one to make my point.
i have 14 horses. My life revolves around them. My plumber noted it was like having lots of kids, I said yeah, like having a kindergarten class of unpotty-traind 5 year-olds!!! Never get tired of it, BUT I am at everyone's beck and call because they think I sit around watching soap operas, and my JOB has no worth.
Most weeks I ride 6 days, some will be 5 others will be 7. I have no regrets about how much time I spend at the barn. I do compete very frequently as well. This year might be a little tougher for getting to shows because I'm getting ready to go to college in the fall but I'll get out as much as I can. I love being around horses, it's like my therapy to unwind from the rest of my day.
There was a time when I was riding 20 hours a week, and riding 7 days a week pretty much every week. And I was showing all the time. At this time I was riding a bunch of different horses as well as my own two. Right now I only really have access to my two to ride.
If it's what you want to do, go for it! It sounds like a great opportunity. :-)
