weird bit habbit
I am training a little quarter horse mare named Roxy. She was trained at some point, then something happened with another trainer and she became terrified of her own shadow and bolts when someone tries to get on. I am taking her back to basics. I have been saddling and bridling her multiple times a day because she was spooky with the saddle. That has gotten much better. But bridling, I noticed something I have never seen a horse do. Before I even put my hand on th bit to put it in her mouth she snatches it really fast. Like so fast I.hear her teeth snap together after she grabs it. I am glad I havent gotten a chanc e to get my hand on the bit before she takes it, my hand would be.hurting. she tries it when I am putting a halter on her too, I have to take the rope out of her mouth sometimes. I don't know if this is her showing aggression towards the tack, or me or what. She is otherwise a very submissive run to me when she is scared kind of horse who has not once shown me any kind of aggression except for this bit thing. Has anyone seen this before? She doesn't. Like to give the bit back when we are done working, I.almost have to make her open her mouth to give it to me.

She's just mouthy. Keep practicing with her don't allow her to snatch the bit out of your hand.

Like palogal said, she is being mouthy. And if I had to guess I would say it is an oral fixation due to nervousness.

The Thoroughbred mare I work with also kind of does this. When we got her it was a fight to get a bit in her mouth. Now before the bit even touches her mouth her mouth is open but she doesn't try to snatch it, and I also sometimes have issues getting it out of her mouth.

So what I do for getting it out of her mouth is let them open their own mouth and let it come out on its own.

I've never had the halter issue.

I don't think this is a halter issue, I'm guessing that the trainer made sure horses took the bit right away.

I have the "halter issue" with my 3 yr old gelding. The bit he may or may not take readily (we are working on it). But he ALWAYS tries to grab the halter in his mouth and chew it. I think it's because he is teething.
