What to feed moo this winter :)
Not sure if this is the right place but what do you think I should feed moo this winter, she will be schooled 4/5 days and then hunt (or hack).
I am thinking the same as last winter however, she will be turned out more so would she need feeding less?
-double handful of Alfa-alfa Oil
-scoop of spillers cool mix
-sugarbeet (well, actually speedibeet, lol)
-dollup of oil
-about 5 carrots
(breakfast same but only half a scoop of mix)
not sure how cold it gets there but keep in mind that horses use more energy in the winter to stay warm, as they are usually drinking colder water and such as well.
Where's the hay amount?
hay is important; winter turnout does not provide enough nutrition.
That being said, don't get your horse 'fat' for the winter. I know a lot of people say that extra weight is alright during the winter, and I disagree. Horse's joints don't do well under excess weight, ever! Keep 'em healthy. ;)
If your horse is holding weight and looking healthy, then the feed is probably sufficient. :)
She will get a big hay(lage) net at night and a smaller day net for when she isn't turned out :)
Horse's should be feed by weight, 1.5-2.0% of their ideal body weight.
Just been experimenting with bags of sugar, lol
Roughly 3 or 4 kg bedtime and 2 or 3 day :)
She is 450ish kg and not a huge eater, she will also have her nut ball :D last year she stayed a good weight, if she needs more i will give her more or if she gets chubby she will get less :D Thanks :-P I didn't know about the 1.5-2% rule
Digestion of fibre is also far more effective for keeping a horse warm - & therefore keeping weight on in winter - than 'hard' feed. A horse's system needs near constant access to small amounts, so if those 2 haynets per day & pasture will give her enough, that's fine. If she is eating it all and going hungry for hrs in between, you may need to provide more.
You may want to consider a ration balancer or such tho, as she is unlikely to get the required nutrients from the feeds you listed(tho I'm not familiar with Spillers).
That works out to about 15 pounds of hay per day for a 990 pound horse. That would be the minimum amount of long forge, unless she gets fat on air. LOL
