Does his frog look weird to anyone else?

I was giving Blaze his boy manicure tonight (i.e. putting hoof dressing on his hooves) and took some pictures of his front hooves. The frogs look very odd to me, and would love some more opinions. I've never smelled any odor that could indicate thrush. He is pasture boarded 24/7 so he probably does a lot of standing around in the mud munching hay with the other boys.

I think it's ok. Your farrier will check it but it looks like it's just been peeled back a little...

Yes, it definitely has. But I didn't know if that something normal to happen, if it can be prevented and if it needs to be treated somehow.

is she sore?

missy06 11-26-2008 08:53 PM

Nope, not that I can tell. I've watched him walk a few times this week, I've paid close attention to his gaits when I'm on his back and I've pressed all over the frog and it doesn't seem to bother him (nor while I'm picking).

Could it be shedding?

Holy geez. I didn't know that frogs shed! What causes that? (You learn something new every day)

My horse's frogs look different all the time, once a big flap(like almost 1/4 of an inch thick) of frog came off of both of Patches' (paint pony) front frogs. If he's acting normal I wouldn't worry about it. Good for you for being observant though :)

my hubby is all in a tizz at the moment because our warmbloods frogs are kinda peeling off. its nothing to worry about though as far as ive been told. ive seen it dozens of times and theres no probs with it ;)

I wouldn't worry about it Missy. Jubilee's frogs look like that from time to time. Frogs just tend to peel like that.
