zoning laws
Hi i was wondering if there was a zoning law in Manitoba, Canada for keeping horses? We live in a very rural area and are about 20 min away from the closest city.

Not sure about your area, but here (I'm in Texas) you can contact city zoning, and see what your place is zoned as (or if it has any zoning). Our county has maps online, though they don't usually given specific details on laws so best to contact them directly (same place you would get building permits for and such, usually). For instance, my place has no zoning (it is outside of city limits, but still within the jurisdiction of the closest town), so it's open to whatever I want aside from specifics on how far from close to lot lines I can building, or how close septic can be to buildings, blah blah blah. There's also AO (agricultural open) which is more or less the same, AO-R (ag open residential) which is a bit stricter, but still allows farm animals, just no farming, as well as residential, commercial, multi family, etc.

Some places with no zoning, or ag, have specific laws (dependent on city or county laws) on the size of land vs. what animals can be kept- or other restrictions such as how close your neighbors are, how many creatures you can have of what, etc.

Each county or town would have its own zoning and laws, it's a little different for each one. You would have to contact the agriculture office in your area, you might be able to look it up in the phone book, google it, or ask around, (farmers, farm stores, etc) to find out who/where it is, and then phone them or stop by there and they'll be able to answer any questions you may have.
