This horse, a 7-year-old gelding, is showing some kind of skin reaction around one eye. The lids are dark, but surrounding them is an area of pale, hairless skin. There are no evident sores, scabs, swellings, or fluid of any kind, it's just a pale, hairless area, and it's only on the one eye. The owner says that the veterinarian told him that it's a fly allergy. Is this likely the cause? If so, how can I clear it up, aside from fly prevention measures? Is there an ointment available that can help medicate or protect this obviously sensitive area? Is it even possible to clear this up, or is this likely to be a more or less permanent blemish?
I've included a picture which shows the pale area - sorry it's not any clearer.
Thanks very much in advance for any advice!
What did the vet say to do about it? I'd personally keep a fly mask on the horse and follow the vet's advice.
I would definitely keep a fly mask on him. Also, there is this ointment called Swat. It keeps flies away from cuts, etc. Maybe you could try a small amount around him eye but be sure not to get it in his eye.
Thanks for the advice. I will look for Swat for his eyes, since they're clearly sensitive to flies. I showed this pic to my boss and she told me that it looks like a scar from what she called 'summer sores,' probably from when he was little, so it's a permanent blemish and doesn't seem to be an active irritation. It's a shame because he's awfully cute aside from that. I've been putting Absorbine on him to help with the flies but I might try an ointment on his face. Savethepitbulls, the horse isn't mine & I haven't talked to the vet, but the owner did get a fly mask for him.
Does anyone know of anything safe I could put on the scar to help minimize its appearance if I were to show him? Thanks y'all.
I have heard flies will lay eggs in ANY moist area. Good fly information on Pro Fly Contol.com, plus a great new product to kill them. check it out at www.tufffrog.com
