Highland Pony

Hi just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with Highland Ponies? I'm looking at one in a few weekends and just want to see what their breed characteristics are.

They are very rare here in North America.

I'm in the U.S., and they're rare here, like ponyboy mentioned.... I just LOVE 'em though! Let us know how it goes, I hope it works out for you. From what I have seen of them online, they seem like really nice riding horses. :D

I'd love to have one.

Highlands are not even that common in the UK, I've never met one but I know of a couple. They are gorgeous and excellent weight carriers.

I used to show M&M's so have met lots of them. We even have a lovely one on the yard here.

They are enormous (I feel like I have to dislocate my hips when riding one) and generaly tend to be a bit stuffy in thier way of going but if you get a good one (like the one on my yard) then they can realy strut thier stuff.
The girl who owns the highland on my yard events hers! only over a low level admittedly but he is a very cool dude who I often pony-nap to babysit Reeco out on hacks!

Thanks!! They are quite a new breed here in Australia, especially in the West. I had a good chat with her owner, who says she can be lazy in the saddle but has great ground manners. Just a touch scared about my hips now, I've got such a tight hip flexor that I shake when dismounting a TB.
I'll keep you updated how it goes, hopefully I may have a new pony :)

A neighbour at one of our past homes used to breed them - they were wonderful temperaments, even the stallion was as easy as a childs first pony to manage. They used to hunt them regularly and they'd go all day
On the downside they do pile weight on if you don't manage their diet really carefully

Anyone have any photos to share? They're so gorgeous.

Nice video off Youtube of a pony that was a breed champion - as you can see they can 'go' when asked!!

And a class at the Royal Highland where you expect to see the top of the breed

I've been off the forum for a bit as I now have bought the highland pony x :). I've been so busy organizing her arrival. She is crossed a TB but defiantly has more of the pony characteristics. She has an amazingly quiet personality and is so relaxed in new situations. I'll post pictures soon when I collect her next weekend!
