I need help!!(Writing A Speech)

Hi guys,

I really need your help as I really suck at figuring out what to talk about during speeches. I have to write a commemorative/special event speech for my public speaking class and I do not know what to write my speech about. What would you guys write about? Or could you help me out a little bit?

Thanks

Ok let's see . . .Does it have to be about something "commemerative"?

How about "mother's day"; the history of it and what it means to people, and how the floral industry depends on it and how it sparked "fathers day, grandparetnts day, secrataries' day .. . .

or

birthday celebrations, how they are done the world over. and some of the most famous ones in history, like great leaders/dicators and how their birthdays might have been celebrated. I think some of the Roman ceasars had some big ones.

If you haven't been given a time line, do not go over 17min. By 20 min. people start coughing, checking the time, shifting, etc. Pick your topic and start writing whatever tho'ts come to mind. This will help get the flow going. Don't try to edit it as you go. Since we're inclined to start sentences with I, try starting at the end or the middle to eliminate the word I. Good luck. My father was a great speaker, knew his subject and never exceeded 17 min.

She doesn't want it to be informative, she says it should reinforce and entertain the already existing bonds... That is why I am stuck.

The speech also doesn't have to be that long, only 4 to 5 minutes.

Welcome to the forum! My first thought was, if you have to write a commomorative/special event speech and it is your choice of topic.....
How about something you love, such as equines? Have you read about/seen the movie, "Secretariat"? That horse not only won the triple crown, but was on the cover of National Magazines, and I believe the 1st animal titled as, "Athlete Of The Year"... You could have a field day with this topic, and probably get an A - Good Luck! :)

I did competitive speech and debate and business speaking events for going on seven years now, and have also been selected to speak at several public events so far. Speaking is wonderful once you get over stage fright, a really empowering feeling to know you have everyone's attention and have overcome the #1 fear in the world.

Four or five minutes seems like a lot, but in reality it isn't. The time will go by very fast.

If your teacher wants you to reinforce events, why not talk about other people in your class? Tease them, stir up inside jokes, go to each classmate one at a time and talk about your time with them.

You could also talk about something funny that happened while you were with your family or friends.

If you can, I would look up Oratory national speeches for National Forensics League (NFL) on youtube. I am not certain if there is any on there but the speeches from nationals the past couple years have been incredible and would really maybe un stick you to see someone else performing.

NorthernStar, the thing is I would do that normally, but with this class everyone lives in the city and are not horse people. So that topic or anything involving horses wouldn't really work well. Or at least I don't think it would.

Thanks SorrelHorse! That is a neat idea, I will have to look that up!
