It's time for a donkey update! =D

I thought I'd post a little donkey update, it's been a while! :D

First, I've been driving the them tandem on the ground. It's been, well, funny! The people at the barn get quite a chuckle when the see me with my very long lines trying to get them lined up. I must say, they are VERY tolerant and don't care about getting caught up in rope. If anyone else has a better suggestion then my method I'd much appreciate it. I line the first one up (Venus) and take the lines and place them to a V shape. Then (if she doesn't follow me or him ) I grab JJ and set him between the V. I sort out his lines and lay them over Venus and pick them up and off we go. About 60% of the time. Once we are going they will go about 5 or 6 laps before someone gets all screwy, then it's back to square one!

Today was a pretty big day! I used JJ for two lessons. The first was a little girl who's mother just wanted her to barn do work so she helped me groom and tack them. She got a quick 5 minute spin. Next we did a group of kids in foster care, with and without disabilities. JJ's halter was on under his bridle so I lead/taught. He couldn't have been better with all the in and out of the cart, one kid screaming, and of course the every lovely rein flailing! He took it all in stride. All of the kids loved it. They were happy to be doing something different, other then riding. I'm so proud of my little bugger! :D

I'm hoping to body clip them this summer. The last time they were done someone had to sit on them :-| but they are so **** furry and they aren't shedding a hair anymore.

Just so you can put a face to the name, the brown one is Venus and the grey is JJ. I don't have any new pics.

Yes, he is walking her.

Venus, in her "bondage bridle", as it's known around the barn.

That's cool. Sounds like theyll work well together.

On the "bondage bridle" I about had to laugh when I read that! There was a conversation the other day with a buddy of mine who sells tack. Lets just say that fits into the mix. Now I won't go to his house on Wednesdays!

Taffy, I'll get more photos next time. I almost got a super cute on of Venus resting her head on JJ's withers. They are good. Gotta get Venus up and moving a little more, I use JJ way more, he is a bit more willing to follow directions.

We had a fun day! I took JJ for a ride in suburbia. I've taken him onto a very small quiet dead end residential street, but this was like a full on neighborhood. Dogs barking, cars passing, people approaching us, lawn mowers. He wasn't very sure about it, but he went willingly. Gotta remember to take the reins off the snaffle and bump them down a rung or two. He was pretty strong. If I can get him used to the road/neighborhood I would have so much more room to drive him! I'd have photos, but I didn't think it was safe.

When we got back I gave both of them their first bath in... a very long time!! They still have a lot of hair though so I was kind of wishing I hadn't soaped them up. JJ enjoyed it, Venus just tolerated it. I also brought the clippers out today, both of them got wide eyed and freaky. A friend of mine is becoming a vet tech and is taking a class in large animal restraint. She wants to come down to learn a few things, so what better lesson in restraint then restraining a donkey for a body clip!

And more eye candy!

Here are some pics of today's residential adventure! Needless to say he was a hit! He stood perfectly calm for 20+ people to pet him at random intervals. I was very impressed and proud of him. He is not a fan of trash bags though.
