kineton noseband
My gelding gets way to excited cross country and i'm looking for a way to get more control (collect for coffins banks ect.) without over bitting, since we've had a few accidents because of not being able to collect. Right now he is going in a waterford eggbut with a figure 8 noseband. I have tried many bits on him and so far the waterford is the only thing that doesnt scare the wits out of him. He completly loses it with hackamores and any type of gag. So I was looking into different nosebands and was wondering if anyone has had personal experiance with either a kineton or a combination noseband?

If he does not like gags, I am thinking he will not like kineton nosebands. Kinetons work with the bit by transferring x amount of pressure to the nose. Therefore, you have limited bit pressure and more nose pressure. I think you have the right idea of not bitting up to a harsher bit. However, if you are having difficulty collecting, the only thing to solve this problem is to go back to flat work.

He doesn't like anything with poll pressure i.e. gags hackamores ect. If i'm correct in my thinking the kineton only puts pressure on the nose, not the poll. I was also thinking about trying a worcester noseband as it looks more refined for the aids. I have had plenty of people tell me that I need to go back to flat with my horse and I continually explain it is not a matter of his manners on the flat or even show jumping. The problem is strictly cross country because he works up a head of steam and just wants to run, if you bring him back into a arena he will go back to doing perfectly balanced transitions, halts, shoulder in, flying lead changes and anything else you would ask of him. So I'm looking for something to remind him even if I am only 5'2" and 100 lbs that I'm still up there and know best.

Work the flat out on a cross country course. Different scenery, different horse.
