Bagging A Tail- Help please
Right now winter is pretty much in full force here.. Michigan weather:-| It kinda sucks lol..
Today we had a trimming app. for all the horses to get there shoes taken off so they don't go skating! But i went out to get sully my mare.. and i looked... and i almost started crying... Her tail was just.. coming out like breaking off.. Looks like her tail got went and then froze and basically is breaking right off.. Sully has a GORGEOUS tail.. LONG and FULL, so it was quite horrible to see this happening...
My worst nightmare is happening. :-(
I wanna bag it so that way it will grow more.. and i wont have to worry about it all that much.. but Im not sure how to go about doing it... one time my 4_h leader had a hole thing about this.. demonstration.. now i wish i would have paid a lot more attention then i did..
If someone could tell me how you do yours so i can have an idea.. that would be GREAT... Thanks
What I do is get the tail as clean as possible, and then braid it from the tail bone down as tightly as you can. Then I take a long tube sock and put the braided part of the tail in it. Then I use a shoe lace to tie it on. I start on the back side of the tail just below the tail bone and push it through the sock, tail, and back out the front side of the sock. I do it again going to the back, maybe a couple of times depending on the horse. Then with both ends of the shoe lace coming out the back, I cross them over each other and take them around each side of the tail bag to the front where I tie the shoe lace ends together. Then you can fold the top of the tube sock over it, and presto - your tail is bagged.
I recommend taking it out and redoing it every 1-2 weeks if it stays up nicely, more frequently if the tail is coming down.
I second the long tube sock. That's what I use currently. Instead of shoe laces, I just cut down the top of the tube sock about 2 inches and use those as my "tie strings". I weave them through the braid and then tie them.
I use vetwrap to wrap my horses' tails. Works wonders!
Here's a How To video on how to do it. I hope it helps!
could someone please tell me why you do this it's a new concept to me
why you would bag a tail?
People bag a tail to protect it (from mud etc) Since it is protected, it can grow longer and thicker. Usually people who show do this. I personally don't show but I want my horses to have the best tail possible.
Appy, what a great video... I know a lot of people who used a panty hose leg on tails. When I showed Evo, he had a proper tail bag on attached to his rug... my mate show prepped him for me :)
Thank you :)
looks awesome. im going to bag my horse's tail this upcoming weekend. He just got his first bottle of MTG
